Al Madras Trail

Al Madras Trail

Located in Petra, Wadi Al Madras occupies an area of 1.5km and extends northwest southeast where it meets the narrow path of Al Siq, which leads to the ancient city of Petra.

Al Madras is the Arabic word for oil press and used to be an agricultural area lies parallel to the Siq I the south.

Al Madras still retains its Nabataean name, which is referred to in an inscription in a triclinium that cities Dushares as the god of Al Madras.

During the winter, the Wadi drains its water into Al Siq, contributing to increasing the risk of flooding.

The nature of the wadi with its high slope area suggests that these structures were put by the Nabateans to reduce flooding risk in the city of Petra and helped manage their ate resources.

This spectacular trail offers a short hiking experience outside Al Siq, taking you west after passing the Obelisk Tomb and before reaching the dam; which traverses an ancient bridge built by the Nabataean to cross the Wadi.

Passing an ancient staircase that is about -2meter wide, the journey then leads you to the top of Al Madras, where you will find an oil press, cistern and several sacred relics, including a high place and a meeting hall for a Nabataean religious association.

Furthermore, ancient roads were also opened here to link agricultural units or holy places around the area.

During rainy days, this trail is closed to avoid crossing the Wadi, which is subject to sudden flooding in front of the Obelisk Tomb.

This trial veers of the beginning of the main trail after you pass the Obelisk Tomb and before reaching the dam.
