Ayla (Aqaba) has been famous for more than three thousand years for its Doum Palm, which was used as a food and as treatment for some medical conditions, especially as it was considered a source for making rugs and baskets.

The Doum palm tree is also considered one of the most important symbols of Aqaba, as it is one of the oldest trees in the city, and one of its heritage landmarks. It is worth noting that there are still a few trees in Aqaba to until this day. There is only one female, while the rest of the 15 trees are males.

The original habitat of this rare, sacred and exotic tree is northern part of Africa, where it is widespread in the coastal region, the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula. The Doum palm tends to grow in areas where there is groundwater and reaches a length of 17 meters.

The Doum fruit is distinguished by its round shape, bright brown color and smooth texture, as it consists of a thin fleshy outer layer and somewhat tough with a sweet taste, and a large solid, oval-shaped seed. In the past, children used to buy it from wooden carts of street vendors as a kind of a treat. The people of Aqaba also roast the pulp with sugar and turn it into a cool, refreshing summer drink, which is also beneficial for the body, as is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals and it helps reduce blood pressure.
